Spoiler alert, it’s ChatGPT. By about 15,000%.
As LLMs continue their steady march towards world domination, we wanted to find out the most popular ones (just like we did with text-to-video tools recently).
So, we checked the search volumes for the top LLMs in the most technologically advanced countries in the world:
- Japan
- United States
- South Korea
- Germany
- Singapore
- United Kingdom
- Sweden
- Israel
- Switzerland
We left China off the list because they mostly use Baidu and Ernie bot – rather than Google.
We then decided on our top LLMs:
Using Google’s Keyword Planner, we got the average search volume over the last year of each tool, in each country.
*See notes on our workings at the bottom.
So, what’s the most popular LLM?
Well, the title kind of stole our thunder, but the winner- by a landslide – is ChatGPT.
It ranks first in every country we checked by a massive margin. Across the nine countries we checked, ‘ChatGPT login’ is being searched for over 1.3 million times every month (on Google).
We’ve broken down and ranked the popularity of each AI tools per country.

A widening business market?
Our AI Director Luke Budka says:
“We’re 18 months into the genAI era and we’re already seeing a reduction in the number of consumer facing chatbots available. Microsoft’s poaching of Mustafa Suleyman and Inflection’s pivot to the enterprise market means OpenAI, Google Anthropic and Meta are the only Western vendors left for the general public to pick from. And Meta’s behind the other two at this point – although not for long as Llama 3 is being integrated into its social media products.
“The business picture is very different though. There are way more options: French company Mistral (President Emmanuel Macron has called the company an example of “French genius”) is Europe’s leading LLM light. And we’re beginning to see plucky new entrants like Reka appear – they’re particularly interesting because they claim to have trained their new Core model from scratch, over a period of just a few months. Does this rapid spin up time suggest the LLM arena isn’t quite as done and dusted as we thought?“

We get that this isn’t a totally fool proof experiment, but it gives us a good sense of the market nevertheless. Here’s some of the logic behind our method.
We started by searching “[name of AI tool] login” to gauge the amount of people who are searching to actually use the tools.
Until February this year, Google’s Gemini used to be known as Bard. To factor in this rename when looking into the search volume for Gemini, we combined the search volume for “Bard login” from May 2023 to February 2024, and the search volume for “Gemini login” from March-April 2024.
We’re also aware that Gemini is an American cryptocurrency exchange and custodian bank – so searches for “Gemini login” aren’t necessarily just for Google’s AI tool.
